GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the work of getting a brand mentioned, recommended and cited in the answers of generative AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Where SEO targets a position in a list of links, GEO targets a place inside the answer itself. Jumpix AI Visibility measures it per prompt and per engine.
Three terms, three different places to appear. The work overlaps; what gets measured does not.
SEO: rank among Google's organic links; measured by position and clicks; levers are keywords, backlinks and technical health
AEO: appear in Google's direct-answer areas (featured snippet, People also ask, AI Overviews); measured by presence per query; lever is one clear answer per question
GEO: be mentioned and cited inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude answers; measured by mention rate, rank, citations and accuracy per prompt; levers are third-party sources, brand facts and citable content
Shared ground: a crawlable site, structured data and pages that answer real questions help all three
How GEO is done, in 5 steps
The loop is the same whether you run it yourself or buy it as a service; it is the loop Jumpix AI Visibility runs.
1. Pick the prompts: the questions customers ask in your category, most of them without your brand name
2. Measure the baseline: ask every engine and record mention, rank, citation and accuracy
3. Find the gap: which sources AI cites for competitors, which questions nobody answers, which facts it gets wrong
4. Fix: get onto those sources, publish answers, state brand facts in text and JSON-LD, open robots access
5. Re-measure: the same prompts 7 and 21 days later, then monthly; keep doing what moved the numbers
How GEO is measured
A GEO score without the answers behind it is a guess. Measuring means asking real prompts and keeping the answers.
Mention rate and recommendation rate per engine, over time
Share of voice against the competitors you choose
Citations: which sites each engine relies on, and whether yours is among them
Accuracy: wrong prices, products or claims flagged against your brand facts
Questions and answers
What does GEO stand for?
Generative Engine Optimization. 'Generative engines' are AI systems that write an answer instead of listing links: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. In Turkish it is usually rendered as 'üretken motor optimizasyonu'. Despite the abbreviation it has nothing to do with geo-targeting or local SEO.
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO earns a position in a list of links; GEO earns a mention inside an answer. SEO is measured by rank and clicks, GEO by whether and how you are mentioned, ranked and cited per prompt. SEO leans on keywords and backlinks; GEO leans on third-party mentions, clear brand facts and content an engine can quote. A healthy, crawlable site helps both.
How is GEO done?
Pick the prompts customers ask, measure the baseline on every engine, find the gap (missing sources, unanswered questions, wrong facts), fix it on your site and on the sites AI cites, then re-measure. Jumpix AI Visibility does the measuring and turns the gap into tasks; the fixes are applied by you, your team or the Jumpix GEO service.
What is GEO good for?
It gets your brand into the answer a customer reads, not just the link they might click. When someone asks ChatGPT which agency, clinic or software to choose, the brands in that answer get the enquiry. GEO also catches wrong facts AI states about you, such as an old price or a closed branch, before customers act on them.
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
No, though they are often used together. AEO (answer engine optimization) targets Google's direct-answer areas: featured snippet, People also ask and AI Overviews. GEO targets generative answers in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Jumpix AI Visibility measures both: Google checks for AEO, engine prompts for GEO.
